SIOUX FALLS S.D. (KELO) — John Thune will become the next U.S. Senate Majority Leader.
The secret vote was made public Wednesday morning and several South Dakotans and other Americans have been reacting to Thune’s win.
Thune said in a statement: “I am extremely honored to have earned the support of my colleagues to lead the Senate in the 119th Congress and I am beyond proud of the work we have done to secure our majority and the White House. This Republican team is united behind President Trump’s agenda and our work starts today.”
Republican Sen. Mike Rounds, who gave a nominating speech for Thune, said congratulations in a social media post.
“With President Trump in the White House and Republican majorities in both the Senate and House, Republicans are positioned to spend at least the next two years getting our country back on track. My colleagues and I agree that John is the right man to lead us in these efforts,” Rounds posted.
CEO of X, Elon Musk, replied to Thune’s post on X congratulating him.
Republican Rep. Dusty Johnson congratulated Thune in a social media post on X.
“Congrats to my friend Senator John Thune for being elected as the Senate’s next Majority Leader. You have proven your strength and leadership skills throughout your career. It’s a new day in America and I know you will work closely with the House and President Donald J. Trump to deliver results for the American people and South Dakotans,” Johnson posted.
South Dakota Attorney General, Marty Jackley said in a social media post: “Congratulations also to @SenJohnThune for being elected as the new U.S. Senate Majority Leader. He will continue to stress South Dakota values while leading the Senate.”
Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken, said in a post on social media: “Having @SenJohnThune leading the Senate is a win for this country on many levels. Principled, steady, and truly one of the good ones. Onward, JRT! #SouthDakota.”
