They just keep on rollin’.

Ford recalled 2.9 million vehicles because of a broken gear shift-transmission connection that can lead to cars rolling away while in park.

The recall was announced Wednesday after four injury reports and six reports of property damage, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents. Ford said it received 1,630 warranty reports and 233 complaints about the issue.

Ford identified the problem in a bushing that attaches the gear shift cable to the transmission, the NHTSA said. The bushing can either degrade or detach.

The root cause hasn’t been established, but Ford said “heat and humidity have the potential” to break down the crucial bushing.

The recall affects various 2013 to 2019 Escapes, 2013 to 2018 C-Maxes, 2013 to 2016 Fusions, 2013 to 2021 Transit Connects, and 2015 to 2018 Edges. Ford said owners would get a letter in the mail notifying them if their vehicle was affected. Anyone with a recalled car is advised to take it to a dealership for a replacement bushing and a protective cap, free of charge.
