The job of a police officer, by its very nature, involves risk. Police inaction, as was the case during the recent school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, is inexcusable.

Nineteen officers heavily armed with tactical gear, including protective vests and high-powered assault weapons, did nothing for over an hour while receiving multiple 911 calls from children trapped inside pleading for help.

As a former Vietnam combat medic and EMT, I find this lack of action indefensible. I was forced many times, under extremely adverse conditions, to expose myself to danger in order to treat wounded soldiers or make rescues. I did it because that was what I was expected to do and because that was my job.
