BROOKINGS, S.D. (KELO) — SDSU and USD battled down to the wire Saturday night, needing overtime to determine a winner as the Jacks scored a touchdown to claim the three-point win.

The Coyotes struck first both in regulation and in overtime. USD scored on the opening drive of the game, and State answered with a TD on its first drive as well.

Then the defenses settled in before SDSU took a 14-7 lead in the second quarter. That held until a 15-yard scoop and score for Mi’Quise Grace evened the score with just under five minutes to play in regulation.

Then in OT, the Yotes started off with possession, and Will Leyland booted a field goal to put South Dakota on top. Amar Johnson punched in his second TD of the game on the Jacks’ possession to secure the 20-17 win.

“I’m excited for the win,” SDSU head coach Jimmy Rogers said. “I’m excited for the pulse of this football team and really the resilience and which they showed because they never hung their head when things didn’t go their way.”

“Certainly had a chance to win,” USD head coach Bob Nielson said. “At the same time, you know, I have great confidence this team is going to keep improving.”

The Jacks host Murray State next week as the Coyotes will have their bye week.
