Needed rain Friday morning

With a system moving eastward, portions of Central Indiana are finally seeing some rain! This will be the story through the morning and early afternoon hours. Not everyone will see rain, but consider yourself lucky if you do! That’s because this October is running as the second driest to date. Indianapolis only has 0.07″ of rain since October 1st.

While the rain is definitely helpful, it won’t amount to much. A few hundredths of an inch is likely with some downpours producing amounts around a quarter of an inch. Rain exits midday with clearing skies late (no problems for any Friday night outdoor events).

If October ended today, it would be the driest on record. After Friday’s rain, the next chance does arrive on Halloween with scattered showers possible. Indianapolis needs more than 0.10″ before the end of the month to avoid being the driest October ever.

Fantastic weekend ahead

Central Indiana has been treated to some fantastic conditions each weekend this month. This continues for October’s final weekend. After a cold front passes through late Friday, temperatures will drop to more seasonable levels. Expect high temperatures on both Saturday and Sunday in the lower 60s. More abundantly sunny skies are forecast for both days. If you will be out and about early each day, jackets will be needed because lows will approach the upper 30s/lower 40s in spots.

September-like warmth returns to end October

After the weekend, upper-level ridging will take place. Indianapolis on average sees three days of 80s in October. This month we’ve had six days and it’s possible we could add a couple more before the month is over. The best chances of this happening will be Tuesday and Wednesday. Forecast highs will run 15-20° above average. Halloween also looks warm with highs around 70°. Luckily, it won’t be anything like Halloween 2023 (High/Low 41°/25° with a trace of rain and snow).

Halloween does have the next rain chance in the forecast. Since we are still six days away, lots of uncertainties exist with the timing, strength and path of the storm. Initial rainfall potential forecasts are calling for at least a quarter of an inch of rain that day, which would keep October 2024 from finishing as the driest on record. As you read this, be prepared to have rain gear potentially for any trick-or-treating!
