GREENWOOD, Ind. — One person died in an apartment fire in Greenwood on Tuesday.

According to a press release from the Greenwood Fire Department, crews were dispatched to Cambridge Square Apartments — which are located in the 400 block of Southbridge Drive — around 4:47 p.m. on a report of a structure fire.

The person who called the fire in advised one hallway in the building was full of smoke. The caller added that they believed there was still an occupant in the building that couldn’t be reached.

Greenwood Fire’s Squad 91 was the first unit to arrive at the scene. Firefighters found a single-story, multi-family residence with no signs of fire visible from two different sides of the building.

First responders learned that some of the building’s occupants had safely evacuated. Upon their entry into the building, however, they found one person who had not made it outside.

That person was transported to Eskenazi Hospital, where they were later pronounced dead. GFD did not identify the decedent in its press release on the incident.

GFD is still investigating the blaze. The Greenwood Police Department and Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office are assisting with the investigation.
