SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — This past week has been a case of “Good News/Bad News” in the weather department. The good news is that we saw measurable rain for the first time in nearly a month in some areas. The bad news is that we need a lot more in order to right the ship.
Take a look at the last 30 days across KELOLAND in terms of observed moisture.
Everyone is in need of rain, with numerous locations seeing 5 percent or less of their average moisture total.
Going into the next several days, the atmosphere does at least attempt to get into a more active pattern. Our blocking ridge of high pressure, which has been the source of our warm and dry run over the last two months, flattens out and allows a few chances for rain to move into KELOLAND.
While the triggering mechanisms are there, we still need moisture to come in to fuel these systems. Fortunately, we get some help there as well. Notice the plumes of moisture that come along by Thursday and early next week.
As we head into November, we’ll see if this slightly more active pattern can sustain itself. While we have a long way to go to see some actual improvement in our drought situation, every step forward is a good one.
