VERMILLION, S.D. (USD) – South Dakota women’s soccer has a new program wins leader. Head coach Michael Thomas earned his 50th win in a 4-2 result over Kansas City Sunday afternoon at First Bank & Trust Soccer Complex, making him stand atop the program record books for wins.
Thomas, in his seventh season with the Coyotes, passed Jessica Maddox (2000-2004) for the most wins in program history and is the first coach in USD women’s soccer history to reach 50 wins with the Coyotes.
The Coyote offense had to snap a four-and-a-half match scoreless drought in order to get Thomas the historic win, and they did with an outburst of four goals. Izzy Quintavalle became the Coyotes leading scorer on the season by scoring the first two USD goals of the day. In between Quintavalle’s goals were a pair of goals from Kansas City, making it 2-2 with 38 minutes to play.
Brooke Conway scored her second goal in six matches this season to log the game-winner in the 64th minute. Conway booted the right footed corner kick into the net off the Roos keeper to give the Coyotes the advantage.
Janaina Zanin put in an insurance goal from well outside the penalty box on an assist from Quintavalle in the 80th minute to all but seal the victory.
The Roos outshot the Coyotes 22-12, but both sides had six shots on goal. Quintavalle had three shots, two goals, and an assist for the Coyotes. In goal, Cambell Fischer recorded four saves, including a punch save off a Kansas City header to keep the Coyotes ahead 3-2 in the 76th minute.
Sunday was also the annual Pink Game for the Coyotes. USD is now 5-1 in Pink Day matches since 2019.
The Coyotes (3-6-3, 1-1-1) head to Brookings for their next match, as USD will take on rival South Dakota State Friday night.
