Spearfish, S.D. (KELO) — Spearfish Canyon is a staple of the Black Hills for both visitors and locals.

Throughout the past few weeks, the colors have slowly started to change as we see a blend of Summer and Fall in the leaves.

From the winding roads to the different foliage, and even the wildlife, Spearfish Canyon has something for everyone.

“So Spearfish Canyon is super unique because we have these amazing cliffs, limestone shale granite cliffs. And then there’s trees that almost seem to grow out of these cliffs. They’re so beautiful to look at and the foliage in Spearfish Canyon is super diverse,” Spearfish Canyon Leaf Reporter Kimberly Talcott said.

“You can go around any corner and you’ll see something new. You can photograph, you can sit back and just look at it. A lot of it is so surreal that you’re like, this can’t be right, and it’s just wonderful,” Missouri visitor Pat Bottaro said.

Spearfish Canyon is currently sitting around 80% to 90% for peak color throughout the canyon.

“Spearfish Canyon is never dull. It is always vibrant, but especially in the Fall. It is really just this mix of blue skies, beautiful trees, and it tends to change a little bit sooner than even the surrounding area in Spearfish,” Talcott said.

Throughout the canyon there are various stopping spots for those wishing to get out and enjoy what’s around them.

“I really like the water against the background scenery. I mean you can go stand next to the most crystal clear water where you can see some trout and then look up and you’re seeing the change in coloration of the various foliage. I mean that’s what I like the most,” Bottaro said.

These colors can still be seen throughout the first three weeks of October before we see a major drop-off.
