An Uptown woman has been charged with attempted first-degree murder for a shooting aboard a CTA Red Line train Wednesday morning.

Indya Smith, 23, is accused of shooting a 33-year-old rider in the shoulder after spitting on him quarreling with him on the “L” train in Uptown at approximately 8:40 a.m.

The victim was taken to Ascension Saint Francis medical center in Evanston where police said he was in fair condition.

Smith was also charged with aggravated battery, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a weapon on the CTA. She was arrested by police officers about 20 minutes later on the 5800 block of North Broadway in the Edgewater neighborhood.

The shooting during Wednesday morning rush hour came as concerns about violent crimes on the CTA mount. A September Tribune analysis, sparked by the fatal shooting of four people on the Blue Line on Labor Day, showed that reported violent crimes on public transit have stubbornly remained above pre-pandemic levels.

A detention hearing is scheduled for Friday at the Leighton Criminal Court Building.
