SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – A special committee is helping guide plans for the proposed Riverline District in downtown Sioux Falls.
Although they’re still in the early stages of planning, the Riverline District project committee’s next goal is to keep moving forward with the plans to grow the east side of downtown.
“The first responsibility is to bring a recommendation to the city council regarding a purchase agreement for land and Riverline. And then after that is to continue to move the vision forward to ultimately we want to have a public vote on a convention center downtown,” Sioux Falls City Council Member, Rich Merkouris said.
The city says the people on the committee list were chosen because of their roles in the community.
“We try to pull together individuals from the community that have served on various other committees, have experience working in a public body like this, and also are people that are able to reach out and kind of gauge from the whole community themselves kind of the vision, build support,” Merkouris said.
A project of this size will require a large public investment.
“How it’ll be paid for, how it’ll be incorporated into the neighborhood, what will the design be, things like that. And this is just to move the process forward, keep the conversation moving forward, recognizing that at some point there will be a public vote,” Merkouris said.
With the idea of this project bringing more economic development to downtown Sioux Falls.
