NEW PALESTINE, Ind. — The New Palestine Police Department has arrested a woman for drug dealing resulting in death.
According to a Facebook post from NPPD, officers were called to the 4500 block of South 500 West for a welfare check on Oct. 19, 2023. The person who asked police to come to the area indicated a possible medical emergency was taking place inside a residence.
Police reported that the caller, later identified as 38-year-old Stephanie Schofield, fled the scene.
When officers made it to the area, they found an unresponsive male, who was later identified as Jerry Moore II by NPPD. Law enforcement reported that Moore II did not have a pulse when first responders found him.
Police and medics rendered aid to Moore II, who was transported to a local hospital before he was pronounced dead. Per NPPD, an autopsy conducted on Moore II indicated he died of a drug overdose.
Police’s investigation of Moore II’s death lasted nearly 10 months. Investigators reported that they reviewed social media records and cell phone data before ultimately issuing an arrest warrant for Schofield.
Schofield was taken into custody on Friday. She faces the following preliminary charges:
- Dealing in a controlled substance resulting in death, a Level 1 Felony
- Obstruction of justice, a Level 6 Felony
- False informing, a Class A Misdemeanor
In Indiana, the maximum penalty for a Level 1 Felony like dealing in a controlled substance resulting in death is a 40-year prison sentence and a fine of up to $10,000.
