SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A roughly 500-ft stretch of E. 6th Street in Sioux Falls that has been closed is nearing its reopening this fall.
The section was previously a gravel road that connected the paved portion of 6th Street near Foss Ave. to Veterans Parkway.
John Osman is a project manager for the City of Sioux Falls, and he provided an update on the situation.
Osman says that the project will be done in two phases. Phase one, happening right now, is to simply get the concrete laid down for what will be a four lane road connection to Veterans Pkwy.
“We hope to have phase one done — which would be the mainline concrete paving — yet this fall,” said Osman. “I think that is November 15th.” Things such as sidewalk restoration, clean up and median work would happen in 2025.
2025 would also be when phase two would be carried out, which is an action to straighten out the currently curved section of 6th Street between N. Dewberry/N. Dubuque Ave. and N. Foss Ave. During this phase, Osman said the street in that area would be closed, though 6th from Foss to Veterans Parkway would be open.
This stretch of street could see plenty of traffic as well once the city moves to redo the intersection of Arrowhead and Veterans Parkways.
Shannon Ausen, the City’s Engineering Program Manager, offered this statement on the matter.
We have not designated 6th Street as an official detour for the Arrowhead and Veterans Parkway intersection project at this point because we are still finalizing project details and timeline, and it is not an arterial street. Madison Street will likely be the official detour route for the intersection project. However, once 6th Street is complete, it will likely be an alternate route used by local traffic.

If you were to drive out to 6th Street today, you would still encounter a lot of dirt. While Osman says the project should wrap up in November, the current stage is construction of the storm sewer to lie below the surface.
