JAY COUNTY, Ind. — Residents have been left picking up the pieces after two tornadoes landed in Jay County this week, with one of those being an EF-1 tornado that caused “significant” damage to the Jay County Jr. and Sr. High School.
The high school posted a video on its Facebook page Wednesday afternoon showing the seconds after the severe weather passed through the city of Portland and came into direct contact with the school on IN-67. The full video can be viewed below:
The high school confirmed to FOX59/CBS4 that the tornado tore through the school before it crossed IN-67 in the path of additional homes. One of those homes lost its entire roof as the severe weather rolled through the area.
The National Weather Service later confirmed that a tornado originated in a corn field in Jay County and went on to generate peak winds of 110 mph.
FOX59/CBS4 spoke with homeowner Kyle Love, who described crawling out of his home to avoid being injured by the falling debris as the entire roof was lost to the storm.
The school sustained significant damage to its roof and ceiling as its hallways, classrooms and library became inundated with water damage.
It was soon confirmed that students would be learning from home for the remainder of this week. Students had an E-Learning day on Tuesday.
