INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department cracked down on illegal street takeovers Friday night.
According to a post on the agency’s X account, officers responded to incidents of spinning and reckless driving. IMPD’s intervention in the street takeovers resulted in arrests and cars being towed.

The arrests IMPD made Friday come as the agency tries to ramp up its response to street takeovers and illegal drag racing. The agency reiterated its renewed resolve to break up such incidents earlier this week.
Last weekend, IMPD officers were attacked and their squad cars were damaged during a series of street takeovers. At least nine people were arrested for their alleged roles in those takeover incidents.
A new proposal designed to help curb street takeovers is slated to be officially unveiled on Monday. If approved, the proposal would allow officials to impound cars involved in street takeovers. The proposed ordinance also calls for organizers, spectators and other participants involved in illegal street racing to be fined.
In a second post on X, IMPD also indicated that those involved in street takeovers could be subjected to additional criminal charges like reckless driving and obstruction of traffic.
