“Today, I am voting against this partisan continuing resolution because it is a deeply flawed and cynical attempt to hold the country hostage so Republicans can implement their extreme Project 2025 agenda. Just like last year, House Republicans have squandered an entire year, forcing Congress to debate extreme funding bills that make cruel cuts and would undermine the critical services that Americans depend on.
For months now, House Republicans have refused to work with Democrats in good faith to pass all 12 full-year funding bills before the end of September. House Republicans are taking their marching orders from Donald Trump, threatening a government shutdown that will harm the American people and our hardworking federal employees. That’s why the Speaker is bringing a continuing resolution to the floor that he knows will fail and that he pulled from the Floor last week because not even some House Republicans want to support this sham.
This brinkmanship is not only irresponsible, but it is also reckless. Instead of focusing on a bipartisan solution to keep the government open, they have chosen to insert cynical legislation like the SAVE Act — legislation that would do nothing to protect the integrity of our elections. Instead, it would disenfranchise voters by making it harder for eligible Americans to register to vote and increasing the risk of purging legitimate voters from the rolls. MAGA Republicans are trying to implement Project 2025 through Congress.
Additionally, House Republicans’ Continuing Resolution leaves out critical additional funding for the Social Security Administration requested by the Biden Administration. These additional funds would prevent reduced hours and potential closures of field offices. This will hurt seniors and vulnerable Americans who rely on these timely services.
This is not governance and only continues House GOP’s dysfunction and chaos. I will continue to oppose any attempt to use the appropriations process as a vehicle to push extreme policies. House Republicans must work with Democrats to ensure the government remains open to serve the American people.”
