SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A large grass fire is currently burning north of White River, South Dakota.
The Mission Volunteer Fire & Rescue posted about a large fire burning north of White River and pointed out the fire danger is “extreme” along with a Red Flag warning in effect for most of the area. Fire departments from Mellette, Jones, Lyman and Tripp Counties have responded along with volunteer fire and rescue from Parmelee, Rosebud Sioux Tribe, BIA Forestry.
Jones County Emergency Management has posted for residents in Murdo to keep a watch on the fire.
“It is moving quickly and will probably be in our County soon. Be prepared,” the post said.
Many Red Flag warnings are in effect throughout the region due to elevated temperatures, high winds and low humidity. This contributes to explosive wildfire behavior.
There have been reports of wind speeds of 50 mph in the area.
Heat and smoke from the fire are showing up on KELOLAND Weather Radar systems.
