What would happen if a turkey wanted to hide in plain sight and escape Thanksgiving dinner? That’s the idea behind the turkey disguise activity that has become a fun modern November tradition. Use our turkey disguise template to engage students in this simple and fun activity that gets kids’ creative juices flowing. Yes, it’s great for younger kids, but even older students can disguise a turkey!

What is the Turkey Disguise?

The assignment is fairly simple: Disguise a turkey as something else (a queen, superhero, movie character, sports fan, etc.) so the farmer won’t find the turkey for Thanksgiving dinner. Our Turkey Disguise template includes three different turkey characters plus three pages of accessories kids can use to disguise their feathered friends. Students choose one turkey and get to work decorating their turkey disguise template using their choice accessories, along with crayons, markers, and/or other crafty embellishments you have on hand like feathers, gems, and yarn.

Extension Activities Using the Turkey Disguise Template

Here are some ideas for adding creativity and academics to your Turkey Disguise project:

Turkey backstory

Have students write the backstory for their turkey. What happened to this turkey to make it want to disguise itself? Why did they choose this disguise? Encourage students to write in their turkey’s unique voice—is it a serious turkey or does their turkey like to crack jokes?

Turkey presentations

Students can share their turkey with the class in a show-and-tell. They can create a short slide presentation with information about their creative process, why they made the decisions they did, and the result.

What happens next?

Have students write what happens after their turkey dresses up. Does the disguise work? What does the turkey do? Do they become a sports celebrity or do they fail at football and have to work in the locker room?

Bulletin board

Create a classroom display and invite other classes to come see your turkeys. Give each visitor a slip of paper for them to write feedback or a comment about their favorite turkey.

Get Turkey Disguise Ideas

The best turkey disguise ideas come from what students already know and love. Use these questions to brainstorm ideas for turkey disguises with your class before sending them to work:

  • What is your favorite sports team?
  • What is your favorite movie or TV show?
  • What is your favorite book character?
  • What community helper could a turkey dress up as?
  • What job might a turkey have?
  • What object could a turkey hide behind?
