Madison police said they devoted “significant resources” on Sunday to a widely circulated social media post indicating that “Madison Schools” would be the target of a school shooting.
However, the investigation determined that the post originated in Florida, and is believed to reference schools in Madison County, Florida, where it also is being investigated by law enforcement, Lt. Caleb Johnson said in a statement early Monday.
Madison police received a number of calls about the post and the Madison School District’s Office of School Safety worked with Madison police to determine if it was a credible threat, Johnson said.
“At this time, the Madison Police Department does not have any reason to believe that schools in Madison, Wisconsin are in danger,” Johnson said. “However, it is understandable that parents, students, and staff may still be concerned given recent national events. Patrol officers will be advised of the situation and encouraged to spend time near the area schools and provide extra presence in the area when possible.”
