INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis woman has officially been charged after a May 2022 crash that resulted in the death of a man in the Geist neighborhood of Indianapolis.
According to court documents, 27-year-old Janai Sarver was charged with one count of reckless homicide – a Level 5 felony – on Tuesday in Marion County. This is in relation to a crash that occurred at the intersection of East 86th Street and Fall Creek Road on May 27, 2022.
At around 2:25 p.m. that day, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called to the intersection of East 86th Street and Fall Creek Road on a report of a vehicle accident involving injuries.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found two vehicles, including a black 2017 Nissan Rogue that was reportedly driven by Sarver, and a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by John Cook. The documents said that Cook, along with Sarver and a passenger in the Rogue, were transported to local hospitals.
Cook was pronounced dead from his injuries at around 4:33 p.m. on May 27, 2022, the documents said.
An investigation into the crash reportedly found that the Rogue crashed into the Trailblazer at the intersection at a speed of 48 mph. This comes as the Rogue reportedly slowed down from a speed of 74 mph before the collision.
Before the crash, the Trailblazer was reportedly stopped and was just leaving the intersection when the Rogue crashed into it, according to court documents.
A witness at the scene spoke with IMPD officers after the fact. The documents said that the witness told police that the Trailblazer had come to a complete stop and started to pull out into traffic when it was struck by the vehicle that came from the left.
According to court documents, Marion County Court officials set a $15,000 personal recognizance bond for Sarver. His initial hearing is scheduled for Friday in Marion County Court.
