SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The 2024 General Election is just over two months away. In the coming weeks we will start seeing more political ads and campaign signs.
From the presidential race to ballot issues, South Dakota voters will have a lot of choices to make. On this week’s Inside KELOLAND we take a look at ways people can prepare for election day.
League of Women Voters
The Sioux Falls League of Women Voters is one orginization working to make sure people are ready come November 5th.
The nonpartisan, non-profit organization will host two forums in September focusing on the ballot issues. The forums will take place Sept. 11th and 18th from 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM at the USD-Sioux Falls Campus.
The LWV is also working to make sure people are registered to vote. Below are a list of events LWV will be present at:
- Sidewalk Arts Festival on Sept. 7th
- Levitt at the Falls on Sept. 14th
- SiouxperCon on Sept. 27, 28, & 29th
For National Voter Registration Day on Sept 17th the Sioux Falls League of Women Voters will be on the campus of Augustana, USF, and Southeast Tech.
AI Generated Content
New technology is making it harder and harder to decipher what’s real and what’s fake online. Earlier this year tech companies pledged to combat AI generated Deep Fakes designed to trick voters.
Dakota State University professor Bill Bendix says fake content can be used in a variety of ways.
“This technology allows foreign threat actors to generate disinformation and spread misleading and polarizing images, footage and messages,” Bendix said.
Bendix says doing your own research and using trusted sources are two ways voters can avoid getting duped by fake content.
Past Convention Coverage
Many of you watched the CBS News coverage of the Republican or Democratic National Conventions over the past couple months.
During previous conventions going back decades, KELOLAND News reporters and photographers were embedded with delegates from both parties who were promoting their candidates and causes before our cameras.
Perry Groten dug deep into our news archives for a look at conventions over the years.
Perry also talked with a Sioux Falls women who attended the 1968 Democrat National Convention.
New U.S. Citizens
The opportunity to vote this November will be a new option for some this year. On August 23rd, 150 people became U.S. citizens during a naturalization ceremony in Sioux Falls.
The ceremony included the singing of the national anthem, the pledge of allegiance, and a time for the new citizens to introduce themselves and say where they came from.
