GREENWOOD, Ind. — A Greenwood man is facing attempted murder and other felony charges after court documents show he allegedly shot his brother and mother after an argument at a family gathering last week.
Marcus Dewayne Mundy, 36, was arrested and preliminarily charged with attempted murder (level 1 felony), battery committed with a deadly weapon (level 5 felony) and criminal recklessness with a firearm (level 6 felony) after Greenwood police were called shortly before 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 23 to the 2000 block of Prairie Sky Lane in response to a person shot.
Upon arrival, officers found a man and woman suffering from gunshot wounds.
According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by FOX59/CBS4, the shooting happened in the aftermath of a social gathering at the Greenwood residence.
Court documents state a witness told investigators Mundy had been busy preparing food while others in attendance were enjoying themselves at the event. By the time Mundy had finished cooking and entered the house, there was little to no food left, court documents said.
This led to an argument breaking out between Mundy and his brother over who was going to eat the remaining food. The witness claimed the verbal disagreement turned physical as other family members attempted to step in and break up the fight, court documents said.
After the fight, Mundy reportedly walked upstairs. One of the witnesses said they followed him to the second floor of the residence where they heard “the sound of a gun being loaded,” court documents said.
As the witness began to walk down the stairs where Mundy’s brother was approaching, they reported hearing one gunshot ring out. The same witness then allegedly observed Mundy’s brother walk toward the front door of the residence with a gunshot wound in his back, court documents said.
The victim was then seen lying on the side of the home where he was “struggling to breath”, according to court documents.
Court documents show a neighbor also arrived to provide assistance by applying pressure to the area of the gunshot wound.
The witness then told officers they reentered the home after being told Mundy’s mother had also been shot during the commotion.
Other witnesses investigators spoke with also reported watching Mundy and his brother “play fighting”, wrestling on the ground and they “didn’t think anything of it” until they overheard a single gunshot ring out from inside the residence.
Court documents show the woman was transported to Eskenazi Hospital in stable condition after sustaining a gunshot wound to the arm. However, the brother’s condition was worse as the bullet reportedly struck a lung and his liver. According to court documents, he is expected to recover.
