SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — KELOLAND’s Pet Food Drive is just two weeks away. Donations will benefit Almost Home Canine Rescue and Dakota Dachshunds Rescue.
3-month-old Lil Buddy first arrived at Almost Home Canine Rescue as a medical emergency. Some of his injuries included a broken leg and a pelvic fissure. That’s why Jennifer Dolan and her family knew they had to help.
“One of the things that they found when they were working on the first surgery with Lil Buddy is he had a pretty decent pelvic fracture as well, and that was starting to heal improperly,” Dolan said.
Several surgeries later, Almost Home Canine Rescue was left with more than 10 thousand dollars in vet bills. That’s why donations to this year’s KELOLAND Pet Food Drive can make all the difference.
“I say every penny helps just because we are again living off of donations are adoption fees don’t cover what we put in to most of the animals. I would say probably at least 50% of our animals come to us, maybe not always with an actual physical injury, but a lot of them have behavioral issues,” Almost Home Canine Rescue Director Katie Day said.
Last year’s drive brought in more than 3600 pounds of food and $1,200 in cash. Both non-profits say no donation is too small.
“All of it helps with vet bills, food supplies for all the dog and puppy pads. We like to supply all of our foster homes with the food and anything they need leashes, collars, all of that great stuff,” Sarah Haugen with Dakota Dachshunds Rescue said.
It all goes towards helping pets just like Lil Buddy.
“This has been so rewarding to watch him evolve into this. He went from this animal that didn’t really move. His eyes were dull and now he’s like this happy puppy,” Dolan said.
The pet food drive begins on August 30th and goes from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the KELOLAND TV station. After that, donations can be brought to Sioux Falls Lewis Stores through Labor Day.
