SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Sioux Falls families dropped off some of their back-to-school shopping surplus Thursday at the Instructional Planning Center. That’s where School Bus Inc hosted a teacher supply drive.

The donations were accompanied by a free photo shoot, treats… and even job interviews.

The bus company that picks up and drops off Sioux Falls school kids accepted drop offs of donated teacher supplies.

“Teachers need index cards, pens, notebooks, binders, different things that they would need for their classrooms. Gift cards are always wonderful,” School Bus Inc. Driver Recruiter Kim Walters said.

Ashley Simonson and her daughters donated water colors, glue and notebooks.

“Late last night, I was going through Facebook and I saw that this event was happening and that they were taking donations for school supplies and we have a lot of hand right now, we thought this would be a great opportunity to donate-slash, get rid of some of those,” Ashlee Simonson of Sioux Falls said.

Families who dropped off donations could pose for free back-to-school photos.

“And you get a digital copy and you can print that out, send them for Christmas cards, whatever you need,” Walters said.

This event also marked the final push by School Bus Inc. to hire more drivers before the start of school next week. They held walk-in interviews inside the IPC with the hope of filling their remaining job openings.

“We probably have about three or four more slots that we need to fill, of full-time route drivers so in the meantime, we have our mechanics, or our recruiters, or anybody else that has a CDL that are filling in the routes to get their children to school every day,” School Bus Inc. Assistant Transportation Manager Rob Scott said.

The offer of free coffee and smoothies was enough to lure both drivers and donors to make this teacher supply drive a success.

It takes at least three weeks for School Bus Inc. drivers to get licensed and trained.
