PIERRE, S.D. (KELO) — One runway at the Pierre Regional Airport is complete, while another runway rehabilitation project is just taking flight.
The $6.3 million rehabilitation of the airport’s secondary crosswind Runway 7-25 was completed Aug. 13, according to a news release from the City of Pierre. The The contractor of the Runway 7-25 project was Morris Inc. and included a new asphalt surface with new markings and new lighting. Federal funds of the project covered 90%, state funds covered 5% and local funds covered 5%.
The Pierre City Commissioners approved this week a bid from Morris Inc. to rehabilitate Runway 13-31, the airport’s primary runway.
This $7.2 million project includes replacing the existing asphalt in the landing area, painting new markings, and installing new lighting, wind cones and wiring. State and Federal funds cover about 95% of the project cost. Runway 13-31 is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2025.
The Pierre Regional Airport had nearly 16,000 commercial flights in 2023 with a current on-time fight record of 91%.
Its commercial air carrier, Denver Air Connection, offers 12 weekly, non-stop flights to Denver International Airport.
