MANILA, Philippines–Converge turned back Magnolia, 89-82, in overtime Friday night to break through in the 2022 PBA Philippine Cup at Ynares Center in Antipolo City.
The FiberXers kept the Timplados scoreless in the extra period to claim their first win in the league.
It was the smallest guy who stood out the most with RK Ilagan drilling a triple with 3.6 remaining to force overtime. He went on to make key plays in overtime, greasing the newcomers’ entry into the win column after losing on opening night to Rain or Shine while capping off a career night.
Jeron Teng led all scorers with 19 points. Maverick Ahanmisi and Ilagan chipped in 14 each.
Ian Sangalang had 22 points for Magnolia, last year’s conference bridesmaids. Jio Jalalon and Calvin Abueva each finished 13 each while Jerrick Ahanmisi chipped in 12 off the bench.
Magnolia actually led by as many as 20 points in the contest.
The Timplados hope to bounce back when it plays 1-0 NorthPort on Wednesday, when the PBA goes to Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Converge, meanwhile, will try to annex the win at the expense TNT which is coming off an embarassing loss to league doormat Blackwater. The two telco clubs will tangle this Sunday, also at the hilltop venue.
