SIOUX FALLS S.D. (KELO) — Drivers in Sioux Falls might be able to drive on the first segment of South Veterans Parkway by the end of 2024.
Construction on the more than $200 million, 8.7 mile project connecting Interstate 29 to Interstate 90 started in June 2023 with the first two-mile segment between Cliff Avenue and Western Avenue in southern Sioux Falls.
Mike Heiberger, Principal Engineer for the City of Sioux Falls, said the first of four projects for South Veterans Parkway has a completion date in November.
“I would say we are ahead of schedule on the project itself, things are coming together really well,” Heiberger said “We got a decent amount of rain that slowed progress but I believe the project will be done by the end of this fall.”

Heiberger said the timing of the weather worked out for them overall.
“A majority of the utility work and the dirt work was completed in year one of this project which are the parts that are mostly affected by rain,” said Heiberger “The timing of the rain worked pretty well with our project from a scheduling standpoint,”
Heiberger said crews are currently working on asphalt paving as well as concrete paving and seeding and setting up road lights.
Traffic signals are up and flashing with the intersection of Veterans Parkway and Cliff Avenue, while the intersections with Minnesota Avenue and Western Avenue are still being worked on.
The project is expected to be fully completed in 2027.
95th and Western Ave Roundabout to open in time for school.
A update from the City of Sioux Falls on Wednesday, showed the roundabout was close to completion, With the crews being done pouring asphalt with only landscaping, lighting, irrigation, and striping the roads.
The Roundabout at 95th and Western is currently closed, but Heiberger said they are hoping to get that open in time for school.
“With Harrisburg North Middle School and Endeavor Elementary School it was a priority we didn’t close that intersection until school was out and we wanted to get it open for when school starts and we are currently on schedule to meet that,” Heiberger said.
