PIERRE, S.D. (KELO) — Two South Dakota utilities that want to supply electricity to the proposed Gevo Net-Zero 1 renewable fuels plant and an adjacent renewable hydrogen production facility will be allowed to make their case to state regulators.

The South Dakota Public Utilities Commission on Tuesday decided that Kingsbury Electric Cooperative and East River Electric Power Cooperative can intervene.

Gevo wants to build the $1 billion plan east of Lake Preston. Otter Tail Power is the designated provider there. Gevo negotiated with Otter Tail Power but those talks didn’t produce a contract. Gevo now wants Kingsbury Electric to be its provider.

Otter Tail Power’s attorney didn’t object on Tuesday. However, Otter Tail wants the state commission to limit Kingsbury Electric’s service to only the Gevo plant and the hydrogen facility, rather than the entire site.

The commission will now move forward on deciding whether the requests to use Kingsbury Electric should be granted.
