Add Kimball to the list of school districts in South Dakota that are implementing device free learning environments for the upcoming school year (2024-25).

Superintendent and High School Principal Matt Dykstra says after talking to staff at schools that have already implemented such a policy, Kimball decided to give it a try.

Dykstra says students in grades K-12 will all have to follow the same general policy.

Some students and adults may be anxious about not being able to text or call during the day, but Dykstra says students are reachable if parents or guardians need to get them a message.

Dykstra says students and community members will be able to find out more when they come to the Kimball School District’s open house next month (Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2024, from 5-6:30pm).

The Kimball School District will be using NuGerm brand cases that can be unlocked with a “magnetic key.” The first day of school for Kimball is Aug. 19, 2024.

Last week (July 21, 2024), the Gettysburg, South Dakota, School District announced that it will be a device free learning environment this coming year.
