JENNINGS COUNTY, Ind. — A man from North Vernon was arrested after he was reportedly held at gunpoint during an attempted burglary at a home in Jennings County.
According to a post on social media by the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office, 27-year-old Jonathan Skaggs was arrested on preliminary charges of burglary and residential entry after an early Monday morning incident.
Deputies were dispatched to a home in the 1500 block east of County Road 150 South at around 2 a.m. after a man, later identified as Skaggs, entered the home, reportedly made himself some food and entered the bedroom of a resident.
The post read that Skaggs then chased the resident through the home. The homeowner then was able to retrieve a firearm and held Skaggs at gunpoint until deputies arrived at the home. When deputies arrived, Skaggs was taken into custody.
Skaggs reportedly told deputies he had tried to break into “several different homes” but this was the first one that had an unlocked door. Skaggs was preliminarily charged with burglary and residential entry.
“This was a very scary incident for a local homeowner that could have had a much more tragic ending,” Cody Low, a chief deputy with the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office, said in the post. “We want to strongly advise residents to make sure that they lock their homes”
