PICKEREL LAKE, S.D. (KELO) — A man broke the existing South Dakota record for catching a bluegill, according to a release sent Thursday by South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks.

Jason DeRoy, caught the record-breaking, one-pound, zero-ounce bluegill in the “unrestricted” category on July 6 on Pickerel Lake.

A licensed angler can catch the fish by an unrestricted method other than hook and line. This includes spearing, snagging, bow and arrow or setline. The angler is also allowed to have aid in landing the fish.

Pickerel Lake is located southwest of Sisseton, in the northeast part of South Dakota.
