SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Ask any of the hundreds of kids who were at Thursday’s hydrant party at Granite Valley Park, and you’ll probably get the same answer.

“I think my favorite thing so far has been in being able to enjoy the music and there being like a lot of people enjoying themselves,” 10-year-old Sadie Priest said.

Music, games and water pouring from the sky were all part of the afternoon excitement thanks to several city organizations.

Some kids said they’ve been going to hydrant parties every chance they get. For others, like nine-year-old Jason Schick, this was their first time.

“Yeah, it’s fun. I like being in the water over there,” Schick said.

There was also plenty to do if kids didn’t feel like taking on the giant hoses, like visiting the Siouxland Libraries’ bookmobile.

“I like books. I really like reading,” 11-year-old Summer Spangler said. “So, being that the fact that there was a library there, that was pretty cool. So we kind of just tried to visit as much as we could and do as much as we could before it ends because it’s like, you know, there’s so much to do in such a short period of time.”

Officer Ryan Valland with the Sioux Falls Police Department said he’s been helping out with hydrant parties for almost 10 years. Today, he was in charge of handing out stickers and a few high fives.

“It’s nice to see people let go of the world’s issues or whatever’s going on and just come here, come out and have fun and just enjoy life for a couple of hours or however long they want to do it,” Officer Valland said.

The next hydrant party is August 1st at Whispering Woods South from 1-3 p.m. Entry is free and no registration is required.
