SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – Delegates around the country are starting to virtually vote to officially pick the new democratic nominee for this year’s presidential election.
President Joe Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as she’s raised over 81 million dollars within the first 24 hours of her campaign.
Now the next question is who would she pick as her running mate?
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz appeared on the short-list of potential vice presidents along with 11 others. On Tuesday he was asked about being Kamala Harris’ potential running mate.
“I’m not going to talk about the specifics on that and at this point in time we’re just going to leave it at that,” Governor Tim Walz said.
Although Harris hasn’t officially been chosen as the Democratic presidential nominee, a state senator from Minnesota says they can’t see anyone else being on the ticket.
“As a delegate, as a member of the Minnesota State Senate, I have not heard a single other name to compete with Vice President Harris for the nomination since it was announced that President Biden was going to leave the ticket. So I suppose anything’s possible. But as you may know, delegates like me are starting remote voting today,” said Senator Nick Frentz, who represents North Mankato in Southern Minnesota.
Frentz says with Walz’s name floating around, people outside of the state are starting to take a closer look.
“I think the interesting thing now is the people in the Mankato region, in southern Minnesota, in the Midwest, are getting a chance to see how everyone else in the nation looks at Governor Tim Walz and where he might fit in and the idea that some think he might fit in helping the president in the White House,” Frentz said.
Walz is now serving his second term as governor after being reelected in 2022. He also serves as the chair of the Democratic Governors Association.
The Democratic presidential nominee could be announced as soon as next week. Kamala Harris is expected to pick her running mate no later than Aug. 7 with the Democratic National Convention starting on Aug. 19 in Chicago.
