SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The results are in for Sioux Falls streets.
A survey by a consultant says the city’s roads are in “very good” condition overall.
The City of Sioux Falls maintains nearly 3,500 lane miles.
“They’re in good condition. The city keeps up on a lot of maintenance that needs to be done,” driver Jaden Witte said.
Last fall, Roadway Asset Services analyzed the conditions of Sioux Falls streets.
Overall, the roads scored a 73 out of 100 on the Pavement Condition Index.
“That’s a fantastic score. On average, with all the different services we’ve done across the country, folks typically land somewhere between a 65 and a 75. Now that’s the average. There are some lower, some are higher, but to put that into perspective too, less than five percent of the agency we work with score above an 80,” Roadway Asset Services Senior Vice President Zac Thomason said.
A majority of Sioux Falls streets range from good to excellent, although a small percentage falls in the marginal to poor category.
The study looks for damage like cracks or potholes.
“A lot of the times you expect the poor condition streets to be in the core area because they’re the oldest, but we’ve made really concerted efforts over the past 10 years to really target those core streets, and they’re really in great shape for the most part, so now you’re kind of seeing the streets on the fringes of the core are starting to get in lower shape so that’s definitely where we’ll be targeting improvements over the next few years,” City of Sioux Falls Principal Engineer Wes Philips said.
This study is one of the tools the city uses to determine future road improvements.
“We’re going to continue to keep the foot on the gas pedal and maintain our streets and invest as many dollars as we can in our streets to keep them as smooth as possible,” City of Sioux Falls Street Operations Manager Dustin Hansen said.
The survey is done every four years in Sioux Falls.
During the last two surveys, the city scored a 70.
