INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Department of Public Works is bracing for heavy rain and potentially severe weather to hit the city late Tuesday and beyond as remnants of the former Hurricane Beryl sweep toward Indiana.

“With heavy rain in the forecast, we’ll be bringing in additional crews to help keep Indianapolis running as smoothly as possible,” said Indy DPW Director Brandon Herget. “We’re urging residents to stay on top of the forecast and make travel choices accordingly.”

The National Weather Service is currently tracking the remnants of Hurricane Beryl, which down grounded into a tropical storm after making landfall in Texas. NWS Indianapolis said the powerful storm’s remnants could impact Indiana late Tuesday through early Friday bringing heavy rainfall and an isolated severe weather risk.

As of Monday morning, NWS Indianapolis said 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rain is expected with amounts up to four inches possible. These higher-end rainfalls could lead to rivers spilling over their banks along with the possibility of flash flooding.

Indy DPW reminds homeowners that they are responsible for drainage issues on their property and asks they make sure all drainage ditches, pipes and gutters are clear of obstruction.

You can notify Citizens Energy Group of flooding and drainage issues in city streets and sidewalks by contacting CEG at  (317) 924-3311.

“Indy DPW also wants to remind the public to never travel through flood waters. Turn around, don’t drown,” the city department said. “Even a few inches of flood water can move a vehicle or sweep someone off their feet.”
