After being very giving to tight ends in recent years, the Tennessee Titans fared better against the position in 2023.
According to StatMuse, the Titans gave up the 13th-fewest receiving yards (649) and fifth-fewest touchdowns in the NFL to tight ends last season. In 2022, Tennessee gave up the fifth-most and 10th-most, respectively.
While you’d like to solely attribute that showing to better coverage from the linebackers, Tennessee didn’t exactly face a loaded group of tight ends. Further, teams feasted against the Titans’ lackluster cornerbacks.
The Titans might have a tough time replicating those numbers in 2024. Not only did the Titans lose their best coverage linebacker in Azeez Al-Shaair, they added Kenneth Murray, who isn’t good in coverage, and the other projected starter, Jack Gibbens, is just serviceable.
The Titans have more question marks in terms of coverage ability behind those two in unproven players like rookie Cedric Gray and sophomore Otis Reese, both of whom are competing for a starting job.
As if all that wasn’t enough to be concerned about, Tennessee has a slew of talented tight ends on their 2024 schedule. Here’s how we rank the starters for each team the Titans will face.
