INDIANAPOLIS — On Jan. 23, IMPD Northwest District officers were dispatched to an area hospital on the report of an adult male who sustained battery-related injuries. On March 31, the man was pronounced dead by medical personal. On Friday, the Marion County Coroner’s Office ruled this case a homicide.

According to a police report, the incident took place in January at the 4900 block of Media Drive, on the northwest side of Indianapolis. IMPD arrested an alleged suspect then, identified as 53-year-old William Spann Jr. With assistance from the IMPD SWAT team, Spann Jr. was taken into custody without further incident, authorities said.

Initially, Spann Jr. was arrested for domestic battery resulting in serious bodily injury—a Level 4 felony in Indiana. The IMPD said his case has since been turned over to homicide detectives, who are in talks with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office to determine a final charge.

Spann Jr. remains in custody as of the time of this article’s publication.
