INDIANAPOLIS – It’s time to enjoy some strawberry shortcake on Monument Circle.
The 58th Annual Strawberry Festival returns to downtown Indianapolis. The event from Cathedral Women of Christ Church Cathedral runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (or while supplies last) on Thursday, June 13.
The annual event had a modest beginning in 1965, when the Cathedral Women started selling 100 homemade shortcakes on the church lawn for the first time. They sold out within two hours.
The event has only grown since then. Now an Indianapolis tradition, it involves 15,320 homemade shortcakes and nearly four tons of strawberries, according to organizers.
We highly recommend “The Works,” which costs $10 and includes homemade shortcake, strawberries, ice cream and whipped topping. Guests also purchase single items, like strawberries and ice cream ($3 each) and shortcake and whipped topping ($2 each).
Cash and cards are both accepted.
Proceeds go to charity, with more than 95% of Strawberry Festival money going toward various organizations, such as food pantries, outreach groups and other nonprofits.
