INDIANAPOLIS — A young male is in critical condition after being found shot on Indy’s near north side Friday night.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched around 8:32 p.m. to the 3700 block of Salem Street after receiving reports that numerous shots had been fired in the area. The run was later upgraded to a person shot.

Upon arrival, IMPD said officers found a young male suffering from at least one gunshot wound in the street. The victim was transported to an area hospital in “very” critical condition, according to IMPD.

As of this article’s publication, police have not yet confirmed the victim’s age.

IMPD Capt. Mark McCardia confirmed that the gunfire also damaged some houses in the area and that a resident’s pet dog was killed by a stray bullet at some point during the shootout. No other injuries were reported.

McCardia added that preliminary information indicates the shooting occurred in the same street where the victim was found.

McCardia urged that there was no longer an active threat to the public. Officers have not yet provided any information related to a possible person of interest.

No other information on a possible suspect or a possible motive was immediately available.

The shooting remains under investigation.

This is a developing story and more information will be added as it becomes available.
