INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Metropolitan police made an arrest in connection with a woman’s 2020 death.
Rakeem Thompson, 32, is charged with murder in the death of 31-year-old Brittany Burns.
On Oct. 10, 2020, IMPD officers were dispatched to Community East Hospital, where Burns was unresponsive after being assaulted. Investigators said she had been involved in a domestic disturbance on the southeast side.
Burns was pronounced dead on Oct. 19, according to previous reports.
In March 2021—months after Burns died—the Marion County Coroner’s Office ruled her death a homicide, determining she died of mixed modality trauma, including asphyxia and blunt force injuries.
IMPD detectives have been working on the case for years and identified Thompson as a person of interest.
On Wednesday, May 22, 2024, the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office issued a murder warrant for Thompson. The IMPD Violent Crimes Unit (VCU), IMPD K-9 Unit and Shelby County Sheriff’s Office took Thompson into custody on Thursday in Shelby County.
An initial hearing in the case is scheduled for May 28, according to court records.
