INDIANAPOLIS — An 18-year-old is in jail and accused of driving under the influence and causing a serious crash on Indy’s north side.
The criminal charges were filed four months after the crash at the intersection of 65th and Keystone. The crash left one victim with serious brain injuries from which she has never recovered.
Surveillance video shows the high-speed crash along Keystone last October. That collision forever changed the life of 22-year-old Katelyn Lowe.
“It’s been horrible,” said Brad Lowe, the victim’s father. “I’ve cried so much.”
Brad said his daughter remains unresponsive and in a vegetative state several months after the crash.
“All the neuro connectors in her brain are torn. She basically has to relearn how to walk and talk, if it’s even possible,” he said. “We really don’t know at this point if she’s going to make it.”
Court records claim Katelyn was the passenger in a car driven by Baeden Ramirez.
The 18-year-old Ramirez is charged with causing catastrophic injury while intoxicated after police say he admitted to smoking marijuana before the crash. THC was also allegedly found in his system.
“His decision to drive that day should be held accountable,” said Lowe.
The speed limit near 65th and Keystone is 35 miles per hour.
Police believe Ramirez was driving 87, without insurance, and ran a red light before he slammed into a truck attempting to turn left.
The driver of the truck suffered only minor injuries.
Katelyn’s dad said that he just wishes everyone who sees the story would learn to be safe while driving.
“It makes me want to see more responsible drivers,” said Lowe. “Drive the speed limit. That’s number one, and then stay sober.”
The suspect is being held on a $60,000 bond pending trial.
