INDIANAPOLIS – An Indianapolis man is set to spend more than a decade in prison after firing a shot during a carjacking.
Anthony Porter, 36, pleaded guilty to carjacking, discharging a firearm during a crime of violence and illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. U.S. District Court Judge Jane Magnus-Stinson sentenced him to 11 years in federal prison.
On April 17, 2023, Porter was loitering outside a convenience on East 21st Street in Indianapolis around 8:30 p.m. when he followed a customer to his car. Porter approached the car, drew his gun and ordered the man to get out, according to court documents.
While the man was leaving his vehicle, Porter fired his gun. The man ran for safety with his hands up; Porter then left the scene in the stolen car.
After a brief search, police located Porter and the stolen vehicle. A search of the car turned up Porter’s fanny pack, which contained a 9mm handgun.
Porter had two previous felony convictions for residential entry that prohibited him from legally possessing a gun.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department investigated the case. Porter will be on supervised release for five years upon completion of his sentence.
