BOONE COUNTY, Ind. — The countdown to the total solar eclipse continues and, as we get closer to the big day, Boone County is taking its event planning to a whole new level.
“Get Mooned in Boone” is the theme for the total solar eclipse weekend here. Discover Boone County said the theme was picked as a creative way to stand out from other places hosting events in the area.
“We started thinking about this a year ago,” said Allyson Gutwein, executive director of Discover Boone County. “We really wanted something that was going to be fun and creative and memorable for people to be able to come and talk about Boone County during this event and after this event.”
The once-in-a-lifetime event will be celebrated by Boone County natives and folks who are visiting for the first time.
“Oh, man I am excited,” Lebanon resident Gabe Woodruff said. “I have already told everyone at work to take PTO for the day.”
From Lebanon to Zionsville and everywhere in between, there will be events happening all weekend long in Boone County. The activities range from live music and entertainment including performances from Pink Droyd, a Pink Floyd tribute band, laser light shows, special sporting events like glow-in-the-dark kickball and an 80s-themed party weekend in Lebanon.
“Who doesn’t love the 80s? I think we are just going to have a lot of fun with big hair and aerobics, roller skating and all of the things that we think of when we think of the 80s,” said Missy Krulik, executive director of Heart of Lebanon.
The goal is to welcome thousands of new faces to Boone County.
“Boone County is a smaller community among some of the giants around here,” Gutwein said. “We are competing with some of the events going on in Marion County and we really want to stand out because we are clever, we are fun, and we have that fantastic Hoosier hospitality here in our community.”
Another goal is to celebrate the people who call Boone County home.
“To know that we have the opportunity to celebrate this as a community, I am excited for it,” Woodruff said. “I am ready for the weekend.”
