INDIANAPOLIS — Mylik Hill was found guilty in the shooting of IMPD Officer Thomas Mangan in February of 2022.
Hill, 32, was convicted on all counts of attempted murder and resisting law enforcement.
Since the start, Hill chose to represent himself but throughout the day today, he began questioning if this was the right decision.
“You chose to represent yourself,” said Judge Angela Davis.
“If I am being honest with the court, I feel like I can’t go on any longer. I am getting nowhere,” Hill said.
Hill decided to continue representing himself as multiple witnesses took the stand. By the end of the day, Hill decided to testify. He showed the courtroom where he was shot that day and then he was asked why the gun was found near him and he pleaded the fifth.
Hill proceeded to declare a mistrial which cannot happen.
“You can’t declare your own mistrial, so it is denied,” said Davis.
And just after 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, the closing arguments were underway. Here is what each side had to say:
“The only reasonable conclusion after putting all of the pieces together and evidence is that Mylik Hill, in an effort to run away from the police that day didn’t want to get caught… So he had to try to find a way to get out of it and he tried to kill the only people that were standing between him and freedom,” said Amy Jacobson, the prosecutor.
“I think it’s clear the state has edited and manipulated the whole ordeal,” Hill said.
