INDIANAPOLIS — All-Star Weekend is inching closer with tip-off just a day away now.
The action is getting underway downtown as fans are starting to hit the ground.
Basketball fans will be welcomed into Indianapolis with open arms as the airport has been transformed in honor of the All-Star Weekend.
Before they even leave the airport, visitors will notice the full-scale basketball court that has been installed in the middle of the plaza for the momentous occasion.
Visit Indy is anticipating 125,000 visitors to enter into the Circle City for the long weekend.
With all of the out-of-town guests wanting to get in on the action, hotels and AirBNBs are packed. Virtually all 30,000 hotel rooms downtown and in the surrounding areas have been booked up for months ahead of the big weekend. Some hotels were even requiring a four-night minimum stay for guests Thursday through Sunday.
In addition to the commercial flights coming into the city, our partners at the Indianapolis Business Journal report the airport is also expecting more than 100 private jets carrying a variety of VIPs from business executives to media, celebrities and professional athletes.
It’s expected for most of the travel to start Wednesday and pick up into the weekend.
“I work here every day, so as I walk through the terminal the chatter and the buzz and the energy is just electric. Everyone is talking about it. Everyone that is walking through the terminal is saying, ‘Oh yeah, Indy is hosting All-Star Weekend. That is coming up isn’t it?’” said Marsha Wurster, senior director of commercial enterprise with the Indianapolis International Airport.
In addition to the basketball court, the airport will also have live music to welcome guests this week and there will even be a sneaker artist doing live demonstrations and designing custom sneakers.
