A man riding a motorized unicycle died early Wednesday morning in a collision with a Recology recycling collection truck in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley neighborhood near Oak and Octavia streets, officials said.
“Our truck was driving north on Octavia Boulevard when it was struck near the rear of the truck by a motorized unicycle,” a statement from Recology, the company in San Francisco that collects garbage and recycling, said. “Safety is Recology’s paramount priority, and we are deeply saddened by the loss of life in this tragic accident.”
The San Francisco Police Department said it received a report of a vehicle collision involving injuries at 4 a.m. and found the injured male.
Police and medics provided aid but despite the lifesaving efforts, the man died at the scene, the department said in a statement.
Police said the vehicle involved was a commercial truck and described the injured male as a cyclist.
SFPD said the driver of the vehicle remained on scene and was cooperating with the investigation.
Police said that the details of the collision and how it occurred can’t be shared at this time and will be part of the investigation being led by the Traffic Collision Investigation Unit.
Impairment due to drugs or alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash, police said.
