Created with EON
Alongside exercising and eating in a way that nourishes both body and soul, safe, noninvasive treatments can deliver extra fine-tuning—and the tech keeps getting more sophisticated. EON, a new heat laser technology, targets and reduces fat in the abdomen and flanks; for Dr. Chad Deal, a Tennessee-based, a board-certified cosmetic surgeon and the owner of Southern Surgical Arts surgery center and med-spas, its benefits are dramatic.
An EON treatment takes 20 minutes (it’s FDA-approved for fat reduction in the abdomen and flanks), involves no anesthesia or downtime, and is touchless: An intelligent robotic arm hovers over the targeted area, administering laser heat as well as an ingenious cooling technology that keeps the skin’s surface—and thus the procedure—comfortable.
We asked Deal about his experience with EON.
A Q&A with Chad Deal, MD
We’re heating fat to an unprecedented 51 degrees Celsius—so that it can’t survive—while leaving the surrounding tissue and muscle healthy. The skin remains a cool 39 degrees Celsius, so there are no burns and very little irritation, maybe just some mild redness. The highest temperature I’ve seen other devices reach is 43 degrees; EON’s higher temperature is what’s amazing, along with the way it allows the skin to stay safe, cool, and comfortable even while the fat is unable to survive the heating process. It’s safe, and it truly works. We’re seeing great, consistent results without any of the downsides of other noninvasive fat-reduction devices.
We’ve been very impressed not just with the abdomen and flanks but with how we’ve even been able to use EON for pseudogynecomastia (a condition in which the male breast area has excess fat tissue) with very compelling results.
Many of our patients simply don’t want to undergo anesthesia—either out of fear of the surgery itself or because they live such busy lifestyles that they really don’t want the downtime. With the EON procedure, you’re truly in and out—it takes about 20 minutes to treat an area about half the size of a standard sheet of paper. The treatment doesn’t require any sedation whatsoever. Patients can even be on their phones while they’re getting it (in the past, with other treatments, you often couldn’t have electronics out). And you look normal afterward—no swelling.
Most patients don’t really need to. But it’s not unreasonable for people seeking skin retraction to combine it with topical microneedling RF (radiofrequency) devices, which, in my opinion, are the best for shrinking skin. Of all the true skin tighteners out there—monopolar, bipolar, multipolar, and unipolar topical RF are all reasonable—nothing is going to give you better skin retraction than microneedling RF. So combining EON with a great device, like the Sylfirm, is a wonderful combination to add skin-tightening benefits.
Absolutely. I see it in the future treating all the major areas. I see it continuing to be used to treat pseudogynecomastia. It’s not just the fat-reducing technology that’s groundbreaking—it’s also the robot itself. It, too, has an exciting future; I see that robotic arm being integrated into new aesthetic devices and lasers.
