A man has been charged with murder for allegedly firing shots into an Oakland street in the early morning of April 29, killing a 21-year-old woman who happened to be driving by, Alameda County officials said Wednesday.
Bernard Tracie Jimmerson of Oakland told police that he ran outside his home on MacArthur Boulevard and pulled the trigger on his assault rifle because he was “frustrated by the noise of cars racing up and down his street in the middle of the night,” said Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price.
A bullet hit Marie Villa Bedford, the DA said.
“Her murder is heart breaking and absolutely unacceptable,” Price said in a news release.
The Oakland Police Department said officers responded to the shooting on the 9500 block of MacArthur Boulevard after several ShotSpotter devices in the area detected gunfire just before 2:30 a.m. At the scene, they found Bedford with gunshot wounds and provided medical aid; she was pronounced dead on site, police said.
Jimmerson, who is the father of two young children, was charged with second-degree murder, shooting at an occupied car, possession of an assault rifle, and possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon, as well as a gun enhancement, the DA’s office said. He could face 27 years to life in prison if convicted, the DA’s office said.
