The City of Jackson is mourning the loss of a young police recruit who died Monday, according to a statement released by the city Monday afternoon.
“The city of Jackson would like to extend its condolences to the family members of the young police recruit who passed away today,” the statement reads. “Not only was he training to be a police officer with the Jackson Police Department, but he was also a former firefighter with the Jackson Fire Department.
“’Our hearts go out to this young man’s family and members of his recruiting class during this difficult time,’” Police Chief James Davis said.
Officials said training at the Jackson Training Academy is suspended and grief counselors are on scene.
“JPD has requested the assistance of the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation,” the city statement reads.
“This is a terrible tragedy and our hearts break for this young man, his family and the JPD/JFD communities,” said Mayor Lumumba. “We wish his family love and strength as they deal with this unimaginable loss.”
The City of Jackson statement said the city will not release the trainee’s identity “due to the circumstances.”
