A freshman student reportedly stabbed a classmate at Northgate High School in Walnut Creek this afternoon, school district officials told SFGATE.

Officers from the Walnut Creek Police Department were called to the school around 1 p.m. with a report of a student assaulting another. Both students were freshmen. The injured student then required medical attention, the department said in a social media post.

The students were acquaintances, and no other students were involved, Adam Clark, Mount Diablo Unified School District Superintendent said in a statement shared with SFGATE.

The incident allegedly happened at lunch time, Theresa Brandt, public information officer for the district, told SFGATE. She said students returned to class after lunch.

The injured student was transported to a local hospital, while the other student is in police custody on suspicion of stabbing, officials said.

Police investigating the case determined that the stabbing “was an isolated incident,” and said “there is no further threat to students and staff.”

Walnut Creek police are on the scene, Clark said. He said counselors are on site and will be on site tomorrow.

Those with information about the incident are encouraged to call the Walnut Creek Police Department at 925-943-5844.
